03Jun2003 Iraqi child rushed to KKSEH for operation to restore sight

Riyadh, 3rd June 2003

A 13-year-old Iraqi child, who is suffering from serious injuries after a piece of shrapnel struck him in his left eye, has been rushed by a Saudi medical evacuation plane to the Riyadh-based King Khalid Specialist Eye Hospital (KKSEH), it was reported today.

Dr Saed Al-Rabee’, an ophthalmologist at KKSEH, said that the Iraqi child, Omer Abdulkareem Abdullah, was hit by a piece of shrapnel in his left eye, which caused the formation of a cataract and the loss of sight in that eye. Saudi doctors are planning to remove the cataract and place a lens inside the eye; the operation is expected to restore his sight.
