Beirut, 2nd June 2003

The expansion of the Kingdom’s telecommunications network has reached 90% of the target provision of telephone services, and 27% of targeted mobile services, in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia , according to Khaled Al-Milhem, President of the Saudi Telecommunications Company (STC).

Al-Milhem made this announcement in a press interview published today in Beirut, on the fringes of the Arab Telecommunications and Internet Forum, which is currently in progress in the Lebanese capital. Al-Milhem, who is attending the Forum’s deliberations, said that almost 40% of the Kingdom’s population is now expected to benefit from mobile phone services. He hailed the private sector’s contribution to the development of telecommunications services in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Al-Milhem noted that the Arab world is seeking to undertake rapid advances in global telecommunications. “There must be an acceleration of the privatisation of this vital sector, which will increase investment and thus advance and expand it,” he said.
