01Jun2003 Saudi Security Officials Intercept Terrorist Suspects

Riyadh, 1st June 2003

An official source at the Ministry of Interior said that at 9:50pm yesterday, about 10 kilometres northeast of the city of Trobah on the Hail-Lainah road, Saudi security patrol officers observed a suspicious Toyota jeep carrying two people stopping on the road.

When security officials asked the driver to show them his identity card, he fled. The security officials followed the man along a desert road. During the chase, the two fugitives threw a hand grenade at the security officials, which resulted in the death of two soldiers: Dirdah bin Waqaa Al-Shamiri and Saud bin Abdullah Al-Shamiri, and the injury of two other soldiers: Farhan bin Homood Al-Shamiri and Abdullah bin Mishaal Al-Shamiri.

The security officials were able to catch the men, killing Yosif Salih Fahd Al-A’yeeri, who was one of the 19 wanted people whose names and pictures had been previously announced by the Interior Ministry, and arresting the other man, Abdullah bin Ibrahim bin Abdullah Al-Shabrami, near A’thfaa, north of Hail Region. Investigations are underway to verify the culprit’s name.
