01Jun2003 KACST Centre to authenticate digital ID

Riyadh, 1st June 2003

King Abdul Aziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) has signed a contract with Al-Moammer Information Systems (MIS) to establish the Saudi Centre for Digital Certification. The Centre will provide the required security for Internet users, particularly for online commercial and non-commercial transactions.

Director of the Centre, Dr Fahad Al-Hoymany, told Arab News that the Centre would be constructed at KACST headquarters. He explained that the role of the Centre would be to authenticate digital IDs, enabling Internet users to identify themselves online, which would enable them to issue and sign documents in a safe and secure environment.

The authentication of digital signatures is an important element of PKI (Public Key Infrastructure). Lack of such a facility has hindered the growth of e-commerce in the Kingdom. The Ministry of Commerce, which is in responsible for overseeing the cooperation of various ministries with the Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency, has designated KACST as the agency to operate the digital certification centre.
