Cairo, 30th May, 2003

Abdulrahman bin Hamad Alatiyyah, the Secretary General of the Riyadh-based Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), today confirmed support for the strenuous efforts President Mohammed Hosni Mubarak of Egypt was exerting to restore the usurped rights of the Palestinian people and implement the road map.

In a statement on arriving at Cairo International airport earlier today, Alatiyyah referred to Mubarak's hosting of a meeting in Sharam Alsheikh expected to attract a number of leaders to boost peace efforts in the region. He said the GCC has submitted a package of ideas on the issue of improving the performance of the Arab League (AL), expressing confidence in the role being played by Amro Moussa, the Secretary General of the AL, for the general benefit of the Arab nation. In referring to the setting up of an elected Iraqi national government, he said the GCC member countries have underscored how important it is that the Iraqis should be governing themselves as soon as possible.

He said negotiations between the GCC and Egypt to draft a framework agreement on cooperation in the economic field have reached advanced levels.
