17Apr2003 SRCS delegation visits Al-Basra province in Iraq

A delegation of the Saudi Red Crescent Society (SRCS) visited Iraq on Wednesday evening to get an idea of Iraqi needs during the current crisis.

The tour of the delegation in Iraq included Al-Basra province during which the delegation met with the head of the Iraqi Red Crescent Rashed Al-Dhahri and other officials.

The Saudi delegation was briefed by the Iraqi officials on the urgent needs of the Iraqi people, particularly for the medicines for the hospitals, as well as for food and water.

In a press statement following the tour, the representative of the SRCS Salim bin Nasir Al-Dosari said: "We now have a clear picture of the humanitarian situation in Al-Basra province. Therefore, the first Saudi relief aids to the Iraqi people will arrive to Kuwait on Thursday and tomorrow." He noted that the aid will be gathered first in Kuwait in order to be distributed on Saturday to the Iraqi people, adding that the aid will include medicines and foodstuff.

He noted that the distribution will be done in coordination with the Iraqi Red Crescent.
