The newspapers in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia tackled here on Thursday a number of local, regional and international topics, mainly concerning the current developments in the region following the fall of Saddam regime in Iraq.
The Jeddah-based Okaz newspaper focused on the extraordinary regional conference to be held in Riyadh tomorrow for the neighboring countries of Iraq. "The convening of the regional conference ensues from the permanent policies of the Kingdom and aims at helping and assisting the Iraqi people," the paper said. It noted that the Government of the Kingdom had been very keen from the beginning to prevent the start of the war and had sought to stop the spilling of blood of the Iraqi people after the start of the war.
"The Saudi efforts, either solely or within a group of countries, is evidence for the Kingdom's insistence that further deterioration of the security and political situation in Iraq should be prevented," the paper said.
Al-Madinah newspaper dealt with American accusations against Syria over this week, noting that the language of threats used by US officials had been changing. It stressed that Syria and the Arab world should not miss this opportunity to carry out essential reforms. "These reforms are not a response to Washington’s demands, but are in the interests for Arabs because the reforms of the Arab situation will prevent any justifications for further aggression. Reform is the best way of ensuring security," the paper added.
