The Minister of Water, Dr Ghazi bin Abdulrahman Al-Gosaibi, on Monday signed contracts for the construction of four dams at a total cost of SR718 million.
In a press statement, Dr Al-Gosaibi said that under the contracts, a new dam would be constructed in Jizan Region and three new dams in Makkah Region. The storage capacity of the dams will amount to approximately 753 million square-metres.
The Minister noted that his Ministry is currently studying means to attract Saudi investors to support the implementation of water desalination, dam and sewage projects.
He said that arrangements are underway to formulate a national water plan, and noted that the government will not burden citizens with new water charges, but that they should be aware of the imperative of rationalising water consumption in the Kingdom.
