The Saudi newspapers today commented on developments of the situation in Iraq.
Jeddah-based Okaz newspaper expressed sorrow regarding the chaotic situation in Iraq following the collapse of Saddam Hussein’s regime. The daily warned against partition of the country and destruction of its institutions. “It is the duty of U.S. and British forces currently occupying Iraq to guarantee security and stability, to enable Iraq to avert any on-going tragedy,” it said. It urged the international community to fulfil its responsibility towards Iraq, and work to enable the Iraqi people to live an honourable and comfortable life.
Riyadh-based Al-Jazirah said that certain quarters in Washington have accused Syria of extending assistance to the regime of Saddam Hussein in order to justify their intentions to attack the country. It stressed the urgent need for security in the region, rather than increased tension provoked by the threat of further hostilities.
Al-Jazirah pointed out that various countries of the world voiced their keenness to avoid war, and pursue peaceful negotiation. The daily noted that Arab League’s Secretary General, Amr Mousa, emphasised to Washington the importance of settling the Palestinian problem after the end of the war on Iraq.
Under the title of “Free for All”, Riyadh Daily said: “Cheering crowds in Baghdad are no indication that all is well. Anarchy and chaos are currently ruling Iraq. “So far, the gangs of looters, who are exploiting “freedom” to the fullest, have restrained themselves to taking from government buildings and commercial outlets. With no government to negotiate with, the UN cannot be expected to play any role in restoring order: only Washington can restore order. Considering the constraints on manpower, U.S. forces on the ground will be unable to act as policeman; perhaps an interim authority comprising nations from the “coalition of the willing” could be put in place,” the paper said.
