10Apr2003 Press comments urge UN role in reconstruction of Iraq

Riyadh, 10th April 2003

Dammam-based Al-Yaum newspaper stressed that Iraqis are capable of running their affairs and governing their resources, and that the United States should hasten to withdraw its troops from Iraqi territories.

It said that the United Nations should play a key role in administering the post-war situation, thereby fulfilling its obligations towards the Iraqi people. It also called upon Arab countries to take initiatives to support the Iraqi people.

Al-Riyadh newspaper said that the way the situation in Iraq develops henceforth would depend on the behaviour of U.S. forces. “If the U.S. army acts like an army of occupation, it will face resistance,” it said. It added: “The announcement by Israel that Iraqi oil will flow to Haifa through the old pipelines, and that oil contracts will be concluded in the absence of the Iraqi authority, constitutes a flagrant insult to the Iraqi people.”
