07Apr2003 Saudi press comments on post-Saddam Iraq debate

Riyadh, 7th April 2003

Al-Madinah newspaper said that the American goal was first to disarm the Iraqi regime’s weapons of mass destruction, then to remove President Saddam Hussein from power to liberate the Iraqis and enable them to establish democracy in the country. “However, the U.S. Administration is now proposing that American Governors rule Iraq until the country reaches a stage of maturity. Therefore, they will possess Iraqi oil. To this end, the Americans are seeking to obtain legal support that will guarantee them the right to monopolise benefits from the oil revenues,” the paper said. It noted that the American agenda to control future oil contracts and investment is clear. “The Iraqi model is a clear example of this agenda, which relegates the Middle East ‘Road-map’ to a position of secondary interest. The U.S. occupation of Iraq has no evident parallel, other than the Israeli occupation of Palestinian lands,” the paper commented.

Al-Riyadh newspaper raised a question about the fate of Iraqi human resources in the aftermath of war: “After the silence of the guns, Iraq will face a dearth of human resources, as many talented professionals will be incited to emigrate to the U.S. and Britain to prevent the strengthening of Iraq: this will be part of a concerted policy of the U.S. allies to control the resources of the region.” The paper pointed out the export of German professionals to the United States and the former Soviet Union following the Second World War.

The Riyadh-based Al-Jazeerah newspaper stressed that current talks about the post-war era are meaningless and “inappropriate amidst pools of blood, human bodies and the spread of destruction. However, arrangements for a positive future might give hope to millions of Iraqi civilians, if these arrangements accord with Iraqi ambitions,” the paper said.
