The Foreign Minister, Prince Saud Al-Faisal, and his Iranian counterpart, Dr Kamal Kharazi, held talks in Jiddah today on the latest developments in the region, particularly the looming U.S.-led war against Iraq.
Following the meeting, Prince Saud said that the two sides have exerted strenuous efforts to avert war in the region, and asserted the importance of finding a peaceful resolution of the crisis. He said that hope of averting war was dwindling, and that war is imminent. He said that the talks covered potential repercussions of war in the region, and means to minimise the negative impacts of conflict.
Dr Kharazi described the current situation as very difficult, noting the 48-hour ultimatum given by the U.S. President to Iraq. Speaking to the press following the meeting, Kharazi said that the region’s leaders have earnestly endeavoured to avert war and promote chances to achieve peaceful resolutions. He expressed concern about the outcome of war in the region, particularly humanitarian and security problems that might arise in the region. He attributed his deep concern to the fact that Iran is a neighbouring country of Iraq.
