On Saturday the Saudi newspapers commented on a number of regional and international topics.
Al-Bilad newspaper deplored the absence of the Arab voice in current international developments, noting that France is leading the free world which rejects the war against Iraq. The paper called on Russia to form an international coalition against the war.
It noted that it is an embarrassing situation that the front that forcefully rejects war against Iraq is led by leaders from outside the Arab region, particularly in the light of daily Israeli crimes against the Palestinian people.
Al-Yawm newspaper noted that division over the war against Iraq is not only manifested in the European arena, but has also appeared within American society.
The paper said that if the war is protracted it will lead to a crisis in the American economy, which will have negative repercussions for the international economy.
In this context, the paper added that some countries have announced that they will not play any role in post-war Iraq unless U.S. military action complies with an international resolution that legitimises the participation of those countries in war and the re-building of Iraq following the war.
Al-Nadwa newspaper said that the Israeli massacre in Jenin is not a surprise in the light of continual Israeli aggression. The country assumed its existence deploying terrorism as a means to establish itself, and it continues to practice terrorism against the entire Palestinian population.
Al-Watan newspaper covered the campaign in the United States against American representatives who questioned the Israeli role in promoting and backing the war against Iraq. It said that James Moran, a Democratic representative received a storm of criticism when he said that the United States would not have planned to invade Iraq had it not received strong support from the Jewish community. “This statement discloses information on the relation between the war and the role of conservative Jews in America who proposed the idea of the war in the 90s and now strongly advocates military action,” it said.
The paper noted that such a statement, among others, proves the Israeli influence on the American decision. It said that the refusal of many countries to approve war against Iraq results from their realization that “a risky group in America is pressurising U.S. Administration to go to war, destroying international relations, and imposing new policies that serve an ideology linked with Zionism.”
