11Mar2003 Conference of Information Ministers concluded

The 6th Conference of the Information Ministers of Islamic countries concluded here today.

The Saudi Minister of Information, Dr Fouad bin Abdulsalam Al-Farsy, led the Kingdom’s delegation to the Conference.

In a second Cairo declaration, the Ministers reaffirmed their definitive opposition to launching an unjustified war on Iraq, and the necessity of resolving the Iraq crisis peacefully, in accordance with international legitimacy and the relevant United Nations resolutions.

The Conference stressed the necessity of maintaining Iraq’s security, unity and territorial integrity.

It affirmed its respect for Kuwait’s independence, sovereignty and security, and the preservation of unity within the internationally recognized borders.

The Conference reiterated its solidarity with the Iraqi people, and called for lifting sanctions within the framework of international legitimacy.

On the Palestinian issue, the Conference emphasized the necessity of supporting the Palestinian people and their national leadership in order to restore their legitimate rights. They affirmed the necessity of resuming negotiations in accordance with United Nations resolutions, the principle of land for peace, and the Beirut Summit Arab peace initiative, calling for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with Al-Quds (Jerusalem) as its capital and for a just resolution to the problem of refugees.

The Conference emphasized the importance of returning all occupied Arab territories, including the Syrian Golan Heights and the Lebanese Shaba’a farms.

The Ministers stressed the necessity of improving the cooperation of Islamic information and media bodies for the development of Muslim societies, to confront malicious campaigns that distort the image of Islam and Muslims, and to serve Islamic culture and the propagation of Islam.
