10Mar2003 Information Minister urges media solidarity to counter hostile campaigns

Cairo, 10th March 2003

The Saudi Minister of Information, Dr Fouad bin Abdul-Salam Al-Farsy, conveyed the greetings of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Fahd bin Abdul Aziz, the Crown Prince and the Second Deputy Premier to the 6th Conference of Information Ministers of Islamic countries, which began its deliberations in Cairo on Monday.

In an address at the Conference, Dr Al-Farsy stressed the importance of enhancing cooperation among Islamic countries to counter prejudiced campaigns against Islam.

“It is not surprising that the hostile mass media launch prejudiced campaigns to distort the image of Islam and Muslims. Saudi Arabia must stand firm to represent the true Islam, and fulfil its role as homeland of the most sacred Islamic sites,” Dr Al-Farsy said.

He stressed the importance of Muslim states’ integrating their efforts to reflect the real values of Islam, and to expose the distortions propagated by some hostile foreign media campaigns.

He called on Islamic mass media organs to continue to emphasize the necessity of promoting and finding a peaceful resolution of the Iraq crisis, within the framework of international legitimacy and the relevant United Nations resolutions.

Dr Al-Farsy urged the Islamic Information Ministers to continue endeavouring to put in place appropriate plans and mechanisms to implement their recommendations and resolutions.
