The Minister of Health, Dr Osama Shobokshi, on Sunday patronized the inaugural ceremony of the annual Saudi ophthalmology meeting for 2003, the 16th annual scientific meeting of the Saudi Ophthalmology Society, and the 20th annual symposium of King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital (KKESH).
Addressing the inaugural ceremony, Dr Shobokshi highlighted the Kingdom’s progressive steps the health sector and its excellent medical services. He said that the symposium’s participants would tackle a number of topics in the field of eye medicine and surgery. He praised the significant role played by Prince Abdul Aziz bin Ahmed bin Abdul Aziz, Head of the Saudi Ophthalmology Society, in working to combat eye diseases.
For his part, Prince Abdul Aziz bin Ahmed stressed the importance of the role played by the Saudi Ophthalmology Society, and said that the Society has been working in cooperation with the Ministry of Health, the faculty of medicine at King Saud University and King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital. He noted that the Saudi ophthalmology meeting would be attended by 900 delegates from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, other Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states, several Arab and Muslim countries, the United States, Germany and Belgium. He pointed out that glaucoma would be the major issue for discussion at this year’s Saudi ophthalmology meeting.
The General Supervisor of KKESH, Dr Abdullah Al-Oweidi, said that participants of the symposium would focus on recent developments in the field of cornea and cataract surgery, plastic surgery, optics and laser treatment. He said that the role of KKESH is not confined to treatment of eye diseases, but it also covers training, education, conducting scientific research and development of ophthalmology departments at all Saudi hospitals.
Later, Prince Abdul Aziz bin Ahmed opened the medical exhibition organized on the occasion.
