02Mar2003 Statement by Saudi Embassy in Washington

Washington, 2nd March 2003

An official source at the Saudi Embassy in the United States of America reiterated that neither the Saudi government, nor the Saudi Embassy or Ambassador, is responsible for the ill conduct of any individual Saudi citizen.

In a statement to U.S. media, Deputy Head of the Saudi Mission in Washington, Ahmad Abdul Aziz Al-Qattan, said that every individual is responsible for his own actions and should be the only one to bear the consequences of his mistakes.

Al-Qattan added that it is incumbent upon the Embassy to provide assistance, including an attorney, to any Saudi citizen who is arrested overseas.

Al-Qattan was speaking in response to questions regarding the Saudi student, Omar Al-Hosain, who was recently arrested in the U.S. on charges of providing false information to obtain a U.S. entry visa and of financially assisting to an Islamic organization in North America. Al-Qattan noted that the Embassy has no contact with that organization, and has never provided it with financial aid.
