Mina, Saudi Arabia, 10th February 2003

The Jiddah-based Islamic Development Bank (IDB) has completed preparations to launch this year’s project for Eid Al-Adha sacrifice, it was announced here today.

The Bank’s President, Dr Ahmed Mohammed Ali, said that the IDB is responsible for managing and implementing the Kingdom's project for sacrifice, which will be launched tomorrow, the first of the days of Eid Al-Adha.

He said that over 30,000 personnel were recruited to help implement the project at the sacred places in Mina, where advanced slaughterhouses were made ready to receive the pilgrims’ sacrifices, a ritual of slaughtering sheep, camels and cows by pilgrims during Hajj. He said that large quantities of meat would be distributed to the needy in Makkah, particularly around the holy Haram, before immediately sending the rest of meat to the poor in more than 27 Islamic countries. Since its inception 20 years ago, the project benefited from approximately 8.8 million goats, camels and cows during each Hajj season, he added.
