Tunis, 7th February 2003

The Minister of Information, Dr Fouad Abdulsalam Al-Farsi, underscored the importance of the Hajj season, and said it that provides an opportune time for thousands of Muslims from various parts of the world to gather together.

In a statement to the Tunis-based Al-Hurriya newspaper, published on Thursday, Dr Al-Farsy said that the Hajj season is a good opportunity for the international community to become acquainted with the reality of Islam. Dr Al-Farsy urged Arab media to project the Hajj season in a manner that negates the biased campaigns launched against Islam by certain quarters in the West. He reiterated the keenness of the Saudi government to promote the success of the Hajj season.

“It is essential that the Arab media remain vigilant and take the required measures to develop its style and enrich its content so that public opinion in the West becomes acquainted with the true nature of the Islamic creed and the values of our deep-rooted Arab and Islamic civilization, which have been the target of antagonistic media campaigns since the incidents of 11 September,” he said.

Dr Al-Farsy stressed the importance of conducting dialogue with the West. He then highlighted the firm relations between the Kingdom and Tunisia, and the significant achievements accomplished by Tunisia under the leadership of President Zine Al-Abdine bin Ali.
