05Feb2003 Foreign Minister speaks to the press

Riyadh, 5th February 2003

The Foreign Minister, Prince Saud Al-Faisal, called on the United Nations Security Council to discuss all aspects of the Iraq crisis, even if a resolution to launch war were issued by the Council.

In his periodic press briefing held here today, he also urged the international community to allow Arab countries a final chance to mediate and intervene to prevent war.

He also said: “In our view, the United Nations is the appropriate body to deal with this issue; resort to the United Nations avoids unilateral action.”

The Foreign Minister expressed concern about the instability of Iraq and the potential internal dissent that could result from war. He said that military action should not be aimed at punishing or occupying Iraq, but at maintaining the unity, independence, sovereignty and internal security of the country.

The Minister warned that the disintegration of Iraq’s internal security would lead to grave consequences for the region.
