A three-member medical team at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSH/RC) in Riyadh is preparing to perform a rare operation, the first of its kind in the Middle East, to remove a benign tumour from a 50-year-old Saudi patient.
In a report published today, Saudi Gazette said that the eight-hour surgical operation will be conducted tomorrow by a medical team led by Dr Abdullah Al-Otaishan, Chairman of the Hospital ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat) Department, Otolaryngology, Head and Neck surgery and Communication Sciences. Other team members include Dr Maher Hassounah, Consultant Neurosurgeon, and Dr Suresh Velgapudi, Assistant ENT Physician at KFSH/RC.
Saudi Gazette quoted an official source which said that the surgery is rare because it involves a new technique to remove the benign tumour from the inner ear through the skull base. Acoustic neuroma neurological disorder is rare in the Kingdom. The patient suffering from the disease complains of dizziness and a hearing impairment.
The operation will be transmitted live through the KFSH/RC Telemedicine Department to 17 different hospitals in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
