The King Khalid University began its life in the form of branches of
King Saud University and Imam Muhammad bin Saud
Islamic University in
Abha, in the Asir region. . In 1998 it was accorded university status. In 2000/2001, some 10,000 students studied in the University's five faculties of
Education, Medicine, Islamic Law and Fundamentals of Religion and Arabic and Administrative Studies.
