27th March 2012 - Amnesty International alarmed at increase in executions

Although only 20 countries, out of 198, carried out executions in 2011, the tally last year was 676 people, an increase on the 527 in 2010. There were 558 executions in the Middle East (360 in Iran and 82 in Saudi Arabia). Although figures are not available for China, the number of executions there is thought to be in the thousands.
