According to the Daily Telegraph, while the Gulf states share the West's misgivings about Iran's nuclear programme, they do not feel increasingly tough sanctions against Iran will be effective in dissuading Iran from its present course.
"Robert Gates, the US defense secretary, has told King Abdullah, the Crown Prince and Defence Minister Prince Sultan bin Abdul Aziz, and other top security officials that Iran had "largely rebuffed" US overtures for a conciliatory dialogue, and that Washington was now focused on ramping up pressure on Tehran.".
Saudi Arabia and the other Gulf states fear heightened sanctions will accelerate Iran's nuclear programme.
