The Israeli plan to annex two holy sanctuaries in Hebron has been widely condemned in the Muslim and wider world, and described by the United States as a provocative act likely to impede still further the faltering peace process. Saudi Arabia’s Human Rights Commission (HRC), based in Geneva, has criticized Israel’s annexation of the sanctuaries as an attempt by the Israelis "to erase14 centuries of Islamic heritage" and a breach of international law.
