25th January 2010 - Obama and the Middle East (AN)

In an editorial Arab News gently chides President Obama for raising expectations about his Middle East peace initiative which he has so far signally failed to fulfil. Editorial Comment: Charitably, the Arab News attributes the President's failure to naivety and an underestimation of the difficulties. It is difficult, although not entirely impossible, to believe that a man of President's Obama's intelligence has yet to realise that, unless Israel is forced to come to an accommodation with the Palestinians by withdrawal of American military aid and other support, there is no chance whatsoever of a negotiated peace that provides the Palestinians with anything that could be remotely considered a fair solution. Since, in the face of pro-Zionist pressure groups within and outside Congress, it is inconceviable that any American President would be able to exert such pressure, Middle East peace initiatives are a complete waste of time - as indeed they have been for the last few decades. Only when the Arab world is able to exert more pressure, political and economic, than the Zionists and their supporters will there be any chance of a fair settlement.
