5th January 2010 - Israel approves four new buildings in East Jerusalem (BBC)

Despite international disapproval Israel is proceeding to build four new apartment blocks on land the Palestinians claim in Jerusalem. Editorial comment: While the Western governments and media (and some in the Arab world) continue to pretend that Israel is or could be persuaded to be serious about a peace process with the Palestinians, it must be clear to everyone who has followed the history of Israel from its inception that no Israeli Government will ever agree to accommodate Palestinian aspirations unless they are forced to do so. The reason has been obvious from the beginning. Acceptance of Palestinian rights undermines Israel's legitimacy. It inevitably focuses attention on the outrage of dispossession if the dispossessors agree to relinquish some of what they seized. That is why, rather than relinquish any part of Palestine, Israel feels driven to possess it all. Israel achieves legitimacy when there are no Palestinians. No Israeli government will willingly see a viable Palestinian state because such a state would be a permanent reminder of guilt.
