Prompted by concerns that the Nigerian failed bomber had been recruited and trained by an Al Qaeda unit in Yemen, the Yemeni Government has launched a major offensive against Al Qaeda strongholds throughout the lawless regions of the country where is is based and within the cities where it has active members. The Daily Telegraph reports that "al-Qaeda's presence in Yemen has been bolstered by the arrival of Islamist extremists from Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Afghanistan following successful counterterrorism operations."
