The King Abdullah University of Science and Technology is seen by New York Times journalist Michael Slackman as both an attempt to raise the standard and the image of the Kingdom in the fields of science and technology and as a means of encouraging the people of Saudi Arabia to adopt a more-open-minded attitude to new ideas and new discoveries, thus undermining the extremism which can ensue from intolerance and ignorance.
