12th October 2009 - Afghan outlook bleak as Taliban grabs territory (WP)

In this article, the author Jason Straziuso, suggests that US policy in Afghanistan is fundamentally flawed. The Taleban are succeeding because Western forces have spent too much effort in attacking the Taleban (often killing innocent civilians) and nowhere near enough effort in protecting the Afghan people. As a result, many of those who are labelled Taleban are simply Afghans who wish to defend their families and get rid of the foreign occupiers. Straziuso argues that the Afghans themselves will have to sort out the mess and he reports that elements in Afghan society are already trying to find a way to avoid civil war when the U.S. and its allies depart. He notes that earlier talks in Saudi Arabia between the Afghan factions led nowhere but he insists this is the only way forward.
