President Obama is to bring together Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in an effort to invigorate his administration's Middle East peace initiative. The White House has been at pains to dampen any expectations of substantial progress. Netanyahu has refused to freeze the construction of illegal settlements built on occupied Palestinian land which both President Obama and the Palestinians have made a prerequisite for the starting of talks.
