15th September 2009 - Netanyahu rejects settlement freeze (SG)


Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has refused to freeze all building in West Bank settlements as demanded by Washington. Instead he has declared: I told the Americans we would consider reducing the scope of construction, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has said he will not resume talks with Israel while Israel's illegal settlements continue to expand. Editorial Comment: How President Obama responds to Netanyahu's intransigence will determine whether there is any point at all to his new Middle East peace drive. Unless the United States introduces an element of compulsion into its dealings with Israel, no progress is possible.
