7th September 2009 - Obama Mid-East plans in jeopardy (BBC)

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is undermining US President Barack Obama's Middle East peace initiative by approving the construction of additional illegal homes on the West Bank. "One former US diplomat with extensive experience of the Middle East calls it "a huge slap in the face" for the Obama administration." Editorial Comment:. As has been the case for decades, the only way that there will ever be a settlement acceptable to the Palestinians and the rest of the Arab world is if the United States insists that Israel recognises the rights (political, economic, social and human) of the Palestinians. Unless Israel is forced to accept Palestinian rights, it will never do so, simply because Israel was built upon and remains founded on the denial of Palestinian rights. The only way the United States can insist that Israel changes its ways is by withdrawing the massive economic and military subventions that keep Israel viable. It remains most unlikely that the United States will ever take such action. The pro-Istraeli hold on the American establishment is too strong. Any negotiations or peace initiatives are simply Israel's way of playing for time, time that Israel hopes will legitimise its occupation of Palestinain land and the dispossession of the Palestinian people.
