Kuwait has foiled a plot by members of an Al Qaeda cell to mount a series of attacks on strategically important targets such as the headquarters of the country's security services and the US base at Camp Arifan. There have been several terrorist attacks in recent years - amongst them one by a group calling itself the Peninsula Lions Brigades which fought a running battle with Kuwaiti police: "Four police died and eight of the attackers, including two men from nearby Saudi Arabia".
