20th July 2009 - No happy ending for Saudi film festival


According to the BBC, the sudden cancellation of the planned, week-long Saudi film festival is clear evidence of the strong reaction of conservatives in the Kingdom against efforts to liberalise the strict social code. Films are seen by some conservatives as instruments of Western decadence. "Conservatives are particularly hostile to the wealthy Prince Waleed bin Talal, whose Rotana entertainment group was the main sponsor of the Jeddah film festival."
