King Abdullah has appointed Norah al-Faiz, an American-educated official, as deputy education minister with special responsibility for female education. She becomes the first woman in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to attain ministerial rank. At the same time, the King dismissed two ultra-conservatives who opposed reform, replaced four ministers (the ministers of education, health, justice and information) and appointed a new head of a 150-seat consultative body, the Shura council.
