14th February 2009 - Saudi king shakes up religious establishment (WP)


King Abdullah has dismissed the chief of the religious police (the Mutawa) and the cleric who condoned the killing of the owners of TV stations who were judged to be broadcasting "immoral" content. In addition, King Abdullah has changed the composition of the religious establishment to give moderates more of a say in the Kingdom's governing bodies. All these moves are seen as an effort to facilitate the reform program which the King is eager to expedite.
