In a review of all the possible threats to the United States, the Director of National Intelligence Dennis C. Blair has suggested that political and social instability caused by the global financial crisis constitutes a greater threat than that posed by Muslim extremists. He suggested that opinion in much of the Muslim world has turned against Al Qaeda and its tactics of killing fellow Muslims. Al Qaeda remains a threat and a dangerous enemy but even more pressing is the evident instability in many countries because of the credit crunch.
