With evident outrage amongst US allies in the region at Israel's conduct in Gaza, George Mitchell faces an uphill struggle as President Obama's Middle East envoy. The only measure likely to persuade Palestinians that the United States is serious in seeking a long term peace would be the exertion of US pressure on Israel to stop establishing settlements on what is left of Palestinian land.
