Aside from the killing of some 1,300 Palestinians, Israel's destruction of property in Gaza, on top of its economic blockade of the territory, will prevent any swift reconstruction and will ensure Gazans are totally dependent on Israel for all their basic needs. George Mitchell, Obama's envoy to the Middle East, plans talks with the regions leaders, including Saudi Arabia. His first port of call will be Israel.
