Sir John Holmes, the UN's humanitarian chief, has declared the situation in Gaza worse than he anticipated, having seen clear evidence of "the systematic nature of the destruction". Isreal is now facing allegations of war crimes. The areas capacity to perform any kind of economic activity has been very severely damaged.
