28th March 2008 - More Arab Leaders Snub Syria And Skip Summit (NYT)


Syria's support for the opposition in Lebanon, which has prevented the election of a new Lebanese President acceptable to the Lebanese Government, has led more Arab leaders to join Saudi Arabia in down-grading their representation at the Arab summit in Damascus opening on 29 March. The problem in Lebanon is part of the conflict between the United States and Iran, with Syia in the Iranian camp, along with Hezbollah and Hamas. While the anti-American stance attracts some popular support, most of the Arab states are with the United States.
