Since 1974, the oil market has become much more competitive, with independent traders gradually creating a more or less free market. The power of OPEC as a cartel has consequently diminished in parallel with the decline in its share of the total market. Blaming OPEC for the current high oil price and asking Saudi Arabia to increase production misses the point. The world must start now to wean itself off fossil fules
