21May2008 Saudi holds first film festival (NYT)

With an offical stamp of approval in the form of the attendance of Minister of Culture and Information Iyad Madani, Saudi Arabia's first film festival was launched on 20th May. "The festival is the latest sign of a trend to open up the kingdom, especially culturally, that began in 2005 when King Abdullah came to power."
