The call, by Bill and Melinda Gates, for the eradication of malaria is certainly ambitious and thought by some to be counter-productive, taking attention and money away from the simpler but still demanding task of control of the disease through nets, medicines and DDT. Complete elimination would be extremely difficult. "'Even relatively wealthy countries rarely succeed at that. South Africa, Saudi Arabia and Mexico all control cases but see new ones imported — from Mozambique, Yemen and Guatemala, respectively', Dr. Arata Kochi, the W.H.O. malaria chief said. "
