The Palace of Government area is the historical core of the city of Riyadh. One of its landmarks is Al-Masmak fortress which is a symbol for the establishment of the foundations of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
It represents the heart of the city of Riyadh which embraces the historical and traditional symbols which reflect the spirit of the deep-rooted past.
It is the area on which old Riyadh was based when the late King Abdulaziz regained it to start the process of unification of most parts of Arabia and the establishment of the Saudi state.
It has been the Government headquarters since the start of the second Saudi state and choice of Riyadh by Imam Turki bin Abdullah as capital of his government.
The Palace of Government area contains Imam Turki bin Abdullah Grand Mosque.
Throughout generations, the area has been the main commercial center of the city.
To continue as a political, administrative and commercial center for Riyadh, the Supreme Commission for Riyadh City Development has developed the area according to series of programs.
In the architectural design of the area, the Commission has been keen to maintain the traditional nature of the area.
The area contains the Alsafat square, the main square of the city, and other squares.
Its open spaces and squares are surrounded by some commercial and public facilities.
Imam Turki bin Abdullah Grand Mosque accommodates about 17 thousand worshippers with an area of about 6320 square meters.
The traditional design of the building of the Palace of Government takes into account the nature of close ties between the ruler and the people.
The first floor of the palace contains a royal hall with an area of 2,000 square meters, an office for the King, halls attached to it, the main dining hall with an area of 1,120 square meters and other halls and components.
It also contains the offices of the governor and vice governor of Riyadh region and other facilities.
The upper floors of the Palace of Government contain offices, meeting halls and other services.
The area contains a number of markets and commercial complexes housing a great number of shops and underground parking areas.
The development program of the Palace of Government area included building the Gate of Dokhnah, Aldairah tower, part of the eastern city wall and the Gate of Althomairi.
