14Oct2004 Security source warns against purchase of ‘Iftar coupons’

Riyadh, 14th October 2004

An official security source today warned citizens and expatriates against purchasing so-called Iftar (breaking of the fast) coupons from militants during Ramadan.

Interrogation of militants in custody has revealed that militant groups in some Saudi cities are printing large quantities of coupons and selling them to Muslims who believe they are donating to a charitable cause during Ramadan by purchasing the coupons. The money is then used to finance criminal, militant activities.

The source urged donors to instead donate to listed charities and philanthropic organisations.
