Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Fahd bin Abdul Aziz today chaired the Cabinet’s weekly meeting at Al-Salam Palace in Jeddah.
In a statement to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) following the session, Minister of Culture and Information Dr Fouad bin Abdulsalam Al-Farsy said that the Cabinet expressed deep regret about the deterioration of security in Iraq which results in death and injury of innocent citizens. The Cabinet urged a greater role for the United Nations in working to stabilise that country.
The Cabinet expressed hope that the current national conference in Iraq will contribute to ending fighting and in focusing on a political solution that will restore to Iraq its sovereignty and stability, enabling the Iraqi people to support their government.
On the situation in occupied Palestinian territories, King Fahd stressed the importance of a decisive stance by the international community in support of Palestinian rights and resumption of the peace process.
The Cabinet expressed appreciation for the great efforts by the Sudanese government to contain the crisis in Darfur region.
The Cabinet then reviewed the items on its domestic agenda and issued the following decisions:
The Cabinet endorsed the General Agreement signed in Riyadh on 27 December 2003 between the government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Council of Ministers of Bosnia and Herzegovina for cooperation in economic, commercial, investment, technology, culture, and youth and sports fields.
The Minister of Islamic Affairs, Endowments, Call and Guidance or his deputy was authorized to sign a draft memorandum of understanding for cooperation in the field of Islamic affairs and endowments between the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Endowments, Call and Guidance of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Ministry of Endowments of the Arab Republic of Egypt. The final memorandum will be forwarded for further authorization.
The Cabinet approved the protocol on the headquarters of the Secretariat General of the International Energy Forum (IEF) and its appendices regarding immunities and privileges, which was concluded between the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources and the and the IEF Secretariat General.
