The Jeddah-based International Islamic Relief Organization (IIRO) has granted over SR2 million as urgent assistance to displaced people of the western Sudanese province of Darfur.
IIRO Secretary General Dr Adnan bin Khaleel Basha said that this assistance comes in response to appeals by Sudanese authorities and international humanitarian welfare organizations to alleviate suffering in Darfur province. He noted that the IIRO has helped 2000 families in the province, providing them with foodstuffs including sugar, onion and sauce. He added that the IIRO had worked to achieve the re-settlement of 30,000 displaced people and provided them with food materials, begun to dig wells in regions facing the problem of water scarcity and provided these wells with pumps. The IIRO has provided displaced people with tents, and set up a relief plan for providing displaced people with health services and water.
