Riyadh, 13th April 2004

Unknown militants killed four policemen on patrol on the Riyadh-Qasim highway in two separate incidents today. Following the attacks, security forces discovered two booby-trapped vehicles and confiscated a car loaded with various weapons.

An official source at the Interior Ministry said that, at 1:20am today, while a security patrol on duty along the Riyadh-Qasim highway searched a petrol station in the area, it was targeted by machine gun fire, which killed two of the security officers.

Also along the same highway, a different security patrol was stopped by men disguised as pedestrians seeking assistance and shot at by men with machine guns nearby. Two of the security officials died as a result of their injuries.

Security authorities immediately embarked upon a search and investigation operation, in the course of which they found two booby-trapped trucks packed with explosives, another vehicle loaded with various weapons, a number of militant hideouts and weapons.

Details will be announced pending further investigations.
